OUR NAME

TEN92

For one hundred years, since Maxwell, we have known that physical systems process information. Since the 1930’s and 40’s when Alan Turing, Claude Shannon, John Von Neumann and others first showed us that we could represent and process bits of information electronically, we as a species have consciously been encoding information into matter. We have been dramatically expanding this capacity ever since. A number of thinkers have pointed out that if this continues at such a geometric pace, there will be a point where, in theory, all matter will be an information processor and encoded with information (maybe knowledge?).

There are 10 to the 120th power atoms in the universe and one theory is that if all of this is converted into an information processing machine, the total memory available would be 10 to the 92nd power – hence our name Ten92 LLC. For reference, a terabyte is 10 to the 12th power and a googol is 10 to the 100th power.

The stored-program computer, as conceived by Alan Turing and delivered by John von Neumann, broke the distinction between numbers that mean things and numbers that do things. Our universe would never be the same.
